Where can you combust products?

From the very beginning, you need to check whether boiler or chimney is suitable for upper firing. The ability to burn from above depends on whether heating devices have an air intake under the grate and whether the exhaust outlet is enabled at the top of the furnace. Upper burning as well as upper and lower combustion boilers have got these parameters because they make upper exhaust emission possible.

How to check the boiler

This point not only refers to upper combustion, but also to universal conditions that would keep you safe and show how to use the boiler in a proper way.

  1. You need to check whether the boiler has proper ventilation, which ensures air flow outdoors and free ventilation channel.
  2. If there is no ventilation channel, you can use special window as source of air, which should be always opened while combustion.
  3. Efficient chimney is also necessary; you need to check whether it is permeable or needs cleaning. Even tiny leak between chimney channels can become the reason of weaker string or less-effective boiler performance.
  4. Moreover, check whether your heating installation is safe.

Upper heating step-by-step

After following all the recommendations above, you should be ready to start combustion; you will have properly adapted, safe and clean boiler.

  1. Prepare coal or wood for about a half of firebox capacity as well as you need only a little of dry wood or any other kindling, a little more than before. Those might be brushwood, straw or paper.
  2. Fill in empty grid with fuel. Remember that from the very beginning you need to put bigger pieces of coal and then smaller to create an even layer. The same situation is with wood: bigger below and smaller above.
  3. Put big wood on coal layer above and then add next layer of thinner wood and place them in the middle of the fireplace.
  4. Set up the pile from tiny branches, two or three crossed together. Next, put tiny splinters, straw, paper or grill pieces to fill in the slots in the fireplace. It will ensure you efficient fire burning.
  5.  Open the bottom flap with the help of adjustment screw, which should have been closed before.
  6. If upper doors have got flaps or air-supply openings, you should open them slightly.
  7. Set fire, and then close upper doors. If there are not any, leave them slightly repealed to fire up the kindling.
  8. If the boiler has got a blower, you should set only 1/3 of its power. To set the proper intensity of the blow, you need to observe the boiler after firing up coal. Black and thick ash would mean big blow whereas thick and white or gray would mean small blow as well as lack of air inside the boiler.
  9. In case the boiler has got a controller, set the temperature of 60 degrees. It will ensure possible correction of encountered problems, which provides necessary safety.
  10. Everything will go well when braches set on fire. During the first firing up it is possible that kindling will go out, but lower layers of wood and coal will set up.
  11. During the first hour of burning, coal might produce some smoke, but there will be less of it than during the traditional burning in the chimney.
  12. Coal will burn more slowly and its combustion intensity will decrease due to the low temperature increase in the boiler. However, with the formation of a layer of heat, there will be less smoke with the simultaneous increase in the temperature of the water in the boiler up to its optimal level.
  13. At the moment when the entire content of the furnace is glowing, you can reduce the airflow from the bottom, slightly opening the lid and closing the air through the upper door (you will know, among other things, that the bottom door, which is in contact with the furnace, will be warm).
  14.  From this moment, the boiler does not require any special supervision until it is lighted up again. You do not have to visit the boiler room or take off the grate with the poker, although at the beginning it’s better to check if everything is ok.
